Safaricom tests out new 'Lipa Na M-PESA' card

Safaricom has started testing a new PIN-based and Near Field Communication (NFC)- enabled 'Tap-and-Go' card in Kenya.

The telecommunications services provider says the new offering can integrate with an existing M-PESA account, and the pilot phase is currently being conducted among Safaricom staff, with plans to extend the service to university students.

Bob Collymore, CEO of Safaricom, "As the M-PESA ecosystem continues to expand, we continue to test the boundaries of the service to identify how we can continue to extend the gains of the platform to an increasing number of customers and businesses,"

Safaricom says it has identified an opportunity for continued growth for alternative payment solutions in Kenya which continues to evolve.

"By March 2016, over Sh20 billion in payments had been made on the Lipa Na M-PESA platform, with more than 44,000 merchants accepting the service, an increase of 74% from the previous year," detailed the company in its announcement..

Although Safaricom has not revealed the time period for the trial, it has disclosed that the card under pilot meets all current banking security standards and received necessary approvals from relevant regulators.
