Zimbabwe plans to focus on five major aspects of Information Communication Technology (ICT) to ensure that the country tightens linkages in economic supply chains.

This was announced by finance minister, Tendai Biti who was presenting the 2013 National Budget in Harare, and said that the country’s government would in 2013 concentrate more on the fibre optic, global tele-density, broadcasting equipment, ICT for education and E- governance.

Biti said the success of such projects would make it possible for Zimbabwe to be classified as a “developed and efficient country in the ICT industry”.

“Zimbabwe’s tele-density is currently at 81,5% and is expected to reach 100% by the end of next year,” he said.

“The National e-Learning Programme that was launched by president Robert Mugabe in March this year is expected to transform Zimbabwe’s education sector through internet learning at both primary and secondary school levels,” Biti said

He added that by 2014 Zimbabwe expected to be internationally networked, with about 1, 340 km of cables, carrying massive amounts of mobile phone, television, internet and other telecommunication signals.

Biti said a vast of job opportunities would open up while government bureaucracy, costs of internet access and doing business would be lowered.
