Tigo Tanzania announces management continuity

East African telecoms firm Tigo Tanzania has announced that its former new general manager, Diego Gutierrez, will resume his role following the completion of the tenure of its interim GM.

Gutierrez's experience spans 15 years in the telecoms industry, having worked in several markets in Latin America and Africa.

He previously held the position of GM at Tigo for three years and has also worked in the company's mobile money division in Latin America.

In a statement Tigo said Gutierrez's knowledge of the business and the market will allow for a seamless business transition.

"I am delighted to resume work with an enthusiastic team who collectively share the Tigo vision of providing digital lifestyle transformation to Tanzanians," he said in the statement.

According to research firm BuddeComm Tigo is one of four major mobile operators (incl Vodacom, Bharti Airtel and Zantel) in the East African nation that generate total mobile penetration of 70%, with annual subscriber growth of more than 20%.

Most recently Tigo Tanzania announced plans to invest $120 million in 2015 on its network expansion and improvement.

The investment is expected to include the scaling up of Tigo's 3G sites and fibre network countrywide to make the internet accessible to more users, the company said.
