Ex-PayPal exec joins Jumo

Mobile fin-tech company Jumo has hired Ted Pietrzak as its Vice President of Engineering to push its business and technology integration in Africa.

Pietrzak has previously worked in companies such as PayPal, Visa and lately in eBay's subsidiary Magento as the CTO.

The company describes Pietrzak as "an established results-driven technologist with over 25 years of experience as an engineer, software developer and project leader with a particular focus on the payments and e-commerce platforms."

Jumo has worked with Airtel and MTN in Africa and has disbursed 5 million loans to 2 million unique customers. It operates in Kenya, Tanzania and Zambia, and is headquartered in Mauritius.

The introduction of Pietrzak will help the company develop the platform for broader integration for banks, Mobile Number Operators (MNOs), with other global payment platforms such as Visa and PayPal.

"I can't imagine a more exciting time to join Jumo. Jumo is leading the transformation of financial services in Africa, applying technology to bring unprecedented levels of financial inclusion to people who have simply never had access. I'm thrilled to be part of it," Pietrzak said upon his appointment.

Such mobile money products are becoming synonymous in Africa with banks, and private business joining the fray. MShwari, arguably the first of its kind, now lends to over 10 million subscribers in Kenya only, more than most conventional banks in Africa.
